Saint Benedict Cemetery holds a unique place in the history of Catholic Springfield — it predates Saint Michael Cemetery and stands as one of the city's earliest Catholic burial grounds. Located in the Liberty Heights neighborhood near Armory and Liberty Streets, the four-acre property traces its origins to Saint Benedict Parish, founded in 1847. By the early 20th century the cemetery had largely reached capacity, and care was transferred to Our Lady of Hope Parish in 1906. Saint Benedict Cemetery came under diocesan administration in 1999, and records are maintained at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
